How self-awareness impacts personal and professional development

What comes to mind when you think about personal development? You may think about learning a new language, attending a seminar, improving your health, or developing a new skill. These are good examples of personal and professional development, but there is an essential factor missing – self-awareness.

In psychology research, the theory of self-awareness discovered by Shelly Duval and Robert Wickland explains that when you focus inward you utilize a standard of correctness that determines how you should feel or behave. Based on the conditions set by your environment, you reflect on your past behaviors or performances to conclude whether those actions reflect your highest values. The process of self-reflection allows you to modify your behaviors, so you feel good about them. Without self-reflection, you are bound to repeat the same mistakes.

If the goal of the self-awareness and reflection process is to become aware of your least preferred attributes and work on them, the Emergenetics model has made our lives a lot easier. This model assesses our behavior and thinking preferences. Our behaviors are assessed based on our levels of expressiveness, assertiveness, and flexibility.  This is where the self-reflection process comes into play. Many times the world sees how we behave, before we see it ourselves. Emergenetics tell us how we are perceived by the world. For example, individuals who range on the third-third of assertiveness may be perceived as aggressive and bossy.  In the mind of this individual, they are probably worried about completing a task or project in a timely manner. They are not necessarily trying to take over the project or take control of the situation. On the contrary, individuals with a first-third preference in assertiveness may be perceived as a pushover or timid. In reality, they just don’t like confrontation.  When these individuals are paired together as coworkers, do you see how this may cause a conflict in a working relationship? Being self-aware and aware of those around us, can help us work on our least preferred attributes and understand how we can be more productive when working with others.
